Rugs can be eco-friendly too! When considering accenting floors with an eco-friendly area rug, homeowners have plenty of choices. Consider each of these options when interested in purchasing an environmentally friendly area rug.

Jute

Jute is a natural fiber that is biodegradable, making it a clear eco-friendly choice. When mixed with wool to construct area rugs, jute will not emit any toxins into the air, and many area rugs are made with unbleached wool, making a jute/wool blend a great eco-friendly option.

Sisal

Sisal is a great option because it is an agave plant used in making rope and twine for rugs and other applications. This plant grows abundantly in many areas of the world including Africa, Asia, and more recently, parts of Florida.

Seagrass

Also a wildly abundant plant, seagrass grows in water and is quite plentiful throughout parts of Asia including Western China. Seagrass is very sustainable, making it an eco-friendly choice for area rugs. Plus, it is naturally anti-static and won’t attract dust.

Bamboo

Bamboo has long been thought of as one of the most eco-friendly flooring options, because it is so sustainable. Bamboo grows abundantly all over the globe, which makes it a perfect, environmentally friendly option. As an area rug, bamboo holds the same principles that make it a great choice for your home, as well as the environment.

It’s easy to choose an eco-friendly area rug because the choices are so wide ranging. In general, it is best to choose a material that’s naturally occurring and sustainable. That way, you can rest assured you are making the most environmentally conscious choice for your home.
