Granite is made of large minerals that fit tightly together, specifically quartz and feldspar, as well as a varying list of other minerals depending on the type of granite. The quartz and feldspar are what give it a lighter color (ranging from pink to white). However, the addition of other minerals gives each piece of granite its unique color and overall appearance.

Granite forms from hot lava that erupts on the earth. Granite must form on the earth because it requires continental rocks to add a little bit of water or carbon dioxide (or in some cases both). When the lava is erupted onto the earth, the magma releases water and CO2, melts at a low temperature, hardens with the continental rock, and forms granite.

Granite is typically classified in four categories:

  • I-type (igneous) – formed from pre-existing rocks melting
  • S-type (sedimentary) – formed from melting sedimentary rock
  • M-type (mantle) – evolved from deeper in the earth’s crust
  • A-type (anorogenic) – a unique type of I-type granite

There are many reasons why granite makes a great addition to a variety of remodeling spaces including:

  • Durability – granite is one of the hardest forms of natural stone available
  • Beauty – granite is available in many colors, styles, and finishes
  • Moisture Resistance – granite is the least porous form of natural stone

Explore the added benefits of granite, and decide whether it is the right choice for your home or office.
