Carpet tile, also known as carpet squares has grown in popularity over the years, mostly because it is affordable as well as a convenient type of flooring. However, carpet tiles are not without a few cons. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of carpet tile flooring:

Advantages of Carpet Tile

Cost – Compared to many styles of flooring (natural stone and hardwood in particular) carpet tiles are affordable. This makes them desirable in many spaces where a lot of flooring material is required.

Durability – Typically used in schools and airports, carpet squares are built to last. This makes them a great addition to playrooms and other high traffic areas.

Convenient – Carpet tiles are easy to install, and in many cases can become a DIY project. Because the tiles fit into place with included adhesive, they are also easy to remove for cleaning and replacement.

Disadvantages of Carpet Tile

Appearance – Many find it difficult to make a seamless installation of carpet tiles, and as a result, feel the squares can look disjointed. It is important to purchase the same material and pile of carpet tiles to avoid this.

Water Damage – As with any type of carpet, tiles are not waterproof. This means that they should not be installed in kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas where a lot of water is spilled.

Allergies – Carpet will harbor more pet dander and dust than other options of flooring, so it is important to take this into consideration before installation. If you or a family member suffers from severe allergies you may wish to choose natural stone, hardwood, or another hypoallergenic material.

As with any type of floor installation, proper maintenance and cleaning techniques are essential to keep carpet tiles look fresh and new for years. Consider the pros and cons of installing carpet tiles in order to make the best decision for your next remodeling project.
